TOURNAMENTSCrooked headstones, mist creeping between the vaults and laughter from beyond: Ghosts and Graves sets its graveyard on a board where you lay dice down. This dice games title from Air Dice stands out less for its setting than for the way its two bonus features interlock, each running on a completely different rhythm.
On one side, a coffin mini game that plays out in seconds and shuts itself down; on the other, a blood gauge that fills across several games, including the ones you lose. Grasping that double timescale changes how a session should be approached entirely. Here is how it all works.
The setting goes for tasteful spookiness: graves, a night-time mood and sound effects designed to make you jump, without ever tipping into the grim. Air Dice takes care over the execution, with considered animations and a presentation that establishes the atmosphere from the loading screen onwards.
One detail intrigues in the symbol table: alongside the classic dice faces sit three Chinese characters, valued between 60 and 120 points. They are the best-paying symbols of the base game, and they stand apart from the western graveyard imagery. The studio also lets you set the quality of the loading screen and switch off certain animations, a welcome option on a mobile connection. Few dice games hand the player that much control.
The mechanic belongs to the family of dice placement games, a Belgian speciality of Air Dice. You set your stake, you start the game, and a trio of dice is offered to you as a column, drawn by the program. Your role comes down to one decision: which of the four available boxes will you drop it into? Those boxes fill sequentially from left to right.
Scoring means lining up three matching dice faces, horizontally or diagonally — five paying routes per box. You need at least one hundred points for the smallest prize, and nothing stops you combining several lines and several boxes to push the total higher.
A multiplier system rewards spreading out: scoring in three boxes applies a 1.5x coefficient to the score, scoring in all four takes it to 2x. Gathering nine matching symbols in the same box adds a further two hundred points. An automatic play feature, reachable from the settings, runs games back to back without input.
Three Bonus symbols on a payline open the first mini game. Twenty-four closed coffins then appear on screen, and you open them one at a time. Each reveals either a point value between 100 and 1,000, or a batch of two to five Mystery Games.
The stopping condition is what makes the sequence interesting: the round ends as soon as three coffins carrying the same value have been uncovered. You therefore stack up with every opening, but every opening also brings you mechanically closer to the fatal triplet. The longer the round runs, the higher the odds of a collision, and the bonus caps itself without any spin counter being needed.
It is an elegant piece of design: the player has no decision to make, yet the tension rises naturally as the values already shown pile up on screen. The first openings carry no risk, the last ones are a coin toss.
The second mini game works the other way round. A tube gradually fills with blood, and that gauge advances with every game played, whatever the result. Once it reaches the top, the feature kicks in and awards extra points. Nothing is required of you beyond continuing to play.
That difference in timescale deserves attention, because it changes how a session reads. On most games, a losing round leaves nothing behind. Here it pushes the gauge along: you progress towards a bonus even when the draw gave you nothing. A session is therefore judged over its full length rather than game by game.
In practice, breaking off a session just before the tube fills means walking away from accumulated progress. That is the sort of detail worth keeping in mind before closing the window, particularly for a short break.
The Coffin Bonus can award two to five Mystery Games. Their particularity: the whole scale shifts up to the value of the top prize, one hundred times the sum staked. Those few games therefore concentrate the best the title has to offer. The hundred-point threshold still applies before anything can be collected, and a cash prize does not trigger that hundred-times win.
Beware a common misconception: these games are not handed to you. Each one requires you to commit the same amount as the game that awarded them. They are games of raised value, not free rounds, and the distinction matters when working out a budget.
The stake is set between €0.25 and €25 per game, a comfortable range that nonetheless does not target the very biggest players. The maximum win reaches one hundred times the sum staked, and the game offers no jackpot at all, progressive or fixed: the entire return runs through the points, the multipliers and the two bonus features. Anyone chasing a large pot should look to another title.
One point calls for transparency: the studio does not publish the return to player of this title, nor its volatility. Several pages quote a figure of around 96%, but that is an extrapolation from other Air Dice games, not official data. The only reliable number remains the one shown in the in-game help, on the site where you play. On a title whose RTP is not disclosed, that habit counts for more than any estimate found online.
The game loads in the browser, with no download. On a computer, the four boxes sit side by side with the column of dice awaiting placement; on smartphone and tablet, the layout adapts to the touchscreen, and the graphics quality settings mentioned above come into their own on a less stable mobile connection.
A demo mode on play-money credits lets you get to grips with the mechanic. On this title it serves a particular purpose: it shows concretely how fast the blood gauge fills, information the paytable does not provide and which nonetheless governs the rhythm of a session.
The title does not try to impress with numbers: no jackpot, a measured ceiling of one hundred times the stake, an RTP the studio keeps to itself. Its distinctiveness lies elsewhere, in that pairing of two bonuses built on opposite logics, one immediate and self-limiting, the other patient and cumulative. Few dice games connect the short and the long term so clearly. Those put off by the placement format will walk past; the others will find unexpected depth behind a horror wrapper.
