TOURNAMENTSPastel icing, ice cream scoops and edible rainbows: Cupcake Rainbow trades classic reels for a bakery where wins form from clusters of matching symbols. This slots Belgium title from Gaming1 belongs to the Liège studio's cascade slot family, alongside releases such as Caveman Stoney.
Its distinguishing trait rests on a simple but uncommon idea: during the free spins, the grid itself grows. Here is how the clusters, cascades, multipliers and progressive jackpot work, based on the studio's official figures.
The setting fully embraces its sweet theme. Cupcakes under coloured icing, stacked ice cream scoops and golden tickets make up a pastel palette that stands apart from the dark or gilded moods you usually find in a catalogue. Every symbol has a role in the mechanic, and it is no accident that the two most memorable ones, the ice cream and the ticket, drive the two most rewarding features.
That visual choice suits the pace of the game. Symbols that vanish and get replenished create the feeling of a shop window emptied and restocked over and over, reinforced by lively animations and a light soundscape. An accessible world that will speak to casual players and fans of modern mechanics alike. Cupcake Rainbow keeps a good-natured tone without simplifying its mechanic, and that contrast is exactly what makes it interesting.
Forget paylines: there are none. The grid of five columns by four rows runs on the cluster pays principle, where wins come from groups of matching symbols that touch each other, horizontally or vertically. Their exact position on the grid does not matter, only that they are adjacent. That opens up more winning configurations than a fixed line pattern, since a cluster can form anywhere on the layout.
That difference changes how you read each spin. On a line-based machine, the eye follows fixed routes; here, you look for patches of colour gathering together. In practice, the stake is set as a single amount, with no line count to choose, which makes getting started far simpler for anyone new to the format. A cluster consists of at least five matching symbols in contact, which explains why wins arrive in bunches rather than in dribs and drabs.
Studio: Gaming1
Format: cluster-based cascade slot, 5×4 grid (expanded to 5×5 during free spins)
Paylines: none, wins through adjacent symbol clusters
RTP: 95.99%
Risk profile: medium volatility
Stakes: from €0.10 to €25 per spin
Highlights: cascades, a collection multiplier, up to 50 free spins and a progressive jackpot
Every winning cluster disappears from the grid and lets new symbols fill the gaps. If the refill forms another cluster, the spin carries on, and so on: a single stake can therefore chain several successive wins without relaunching anything.
The multiplier rewards those chains. The more winning symbols you collect over the sequence, the higher it climbs and the more it inflates the payouts of the round. This pairing of cascades and multiplier is what makes the game compelling: a modest opening cluster can set off a chain reaction whose final value bears little resemblance to the initial win. Patience is therefore rewarded through long sequences rather than isolated hits.
The bonus round does not trigger by lining up three scatters as elsewhere. It opens at the end of a run of consecutive winning spins, and the free spin count starts from four ice cream scoops collected. The number obtained is therefore variable, and can climb to fifty spins for the richest sequences.
More importantly, the bonus round alters the playing field itself. The grid moves from five columns by four rows to five columns by five rows, a full extra row. On a cluster game, that addition is far from cosmetic: every extra symbol multiplies the possible neighbours, and with them the chances of forming clusters and chaining cascades.
This combination is what sets the title apart from most cascade slots: instead of simply adding a multiplier during the free spins, the game widens the space in which wins are built.
One element completes the picture: the progressive jackpot. You claim it by gathering three golden tickets within a single spin, independently of the clusters formed. The pot grows with the stakes committed across all players, until one of them wins it and the counter restarts from its base value.
It is not the central mechanic of the game, and it is better approached as a windfall than as an objective. Bringing three tickets together within the same spin remains a distinctly rare occurrence. Most of the return runs through the cascades and the free spins round; the jackpot remains a possibility that can surface at any moment.
The studio's technical sheet lists a return to player of 95.99% and medium volatility. That last point deserves a note, as several review sites class the game as highly volatile: the official Gaming1 figure is the one that counts here. In practice, that medium profile fits a cluster mechanic, where small wins land fairly often and the bigger sequences lift the total from time to time.
Stakes range from €0.10 to €25 per spin. Since there are no lines to multiply, the amount displayed matches exactly what you commit, with no intermediate sum. A moderate stake remains the best ally of this format: as the bonus is earned at the end of a run of winning spins, it helps to have enough spins to build that run.
The game runs directly in the browser, with no download. The desktop version shows the grid at full size with its controls beneath the layout, while the mobile version rearranges the interface for the touchscreen and keeps the clusters legible, an important point on a game where you follow groups of colour rather than lines.
A demo mode on play-money credits lets you get used to the rhythm of the cascades and see the effect of the growing grid during the free spins first hand. On a cluster format, that familiarisation matters more than on a classic line-based machine, where the reference points are immediate. A few spins on play-money credits are usually enough to grasp the pace at which winning runs build.
The title suits players curious about modern mechanics, who prefer chain reactions to fixed alignments, and who are after a light-hearted mood rather than a dark setting. Its medium volatility and its €0.10 starting stake also make it a comfortable entry point into the cluster pays format, without needing to set aside a large budget from the outset.
The game is available at Casino King, among the online casinos serving Belgium, in demo as well as for real money. Enough to open the shop window and see how many cascades follow from a single stake.
